Object·ivity (2015-2017) Objectivity is a philosophical concept related to reality and truth, even outside of a subject’s individual biases, interpretations, feelings, and imaginings. Object·ivity is a series of 12 photographs of goods placed inside white plastic shopping bags. Object·ivity delves into the underlying (in)satisfactions that motivate the reckless consumption of goods in contemporary society. Object·ivity exposes the intrinsic violence, manipulation, technocracy, apathy, isolation, and false securities that influence our consumerist desires. Object·ivity denuounces the social arquitecture that constructs us in this manner. “Consumption is the sole end and purpose of all production; and the interest of the producer ought to be attended to, only so far as it may be necessary for promoting that of the consumer.” Adam Smith “Violence is hidden within democratic structures because they are not radically democratic – Western democracy is merely a domestic convenience of consumerism.” Edward Bond Adam Smith laid the foundations of classical free market neoliberal economic theory with the sole interest being profit. Consumption at an exaggerated rate becomes consumerism, which in turn becomes a source of alienation. The ever escalating needs of alienated individuals who have lost touch with an enriching community by devoting their time to mostly unfulfilled and underpaid labour has created several generations of infantilized adults that utilize consumption to fill the sense of emptiness caused by a meaningless existence. Consumerist society is bombarded by a contrived escalation of urgent need, novelty and availability while pushing the message that we have the right to instant gratification even when it implies the subjugation of other human beings. All this takes place with little thought given to ethics, sustainability and the negative effects of objectification. By deconstructing consumption to its most basic and symbolic element, the plastic bag, I critique the pursuit of immediate gratification inherent to the activity of shopping and expose the societal intent to fulfil unmet needs through consumerism. Object·ivity brings about a necessary debate on how irresponsible consumption becomes a dehumanizing factor when the products that we purchase are used to mask our unattended primal emotional needs.
