About The Artwork

This is part of a series called Inside the Glass box. In this series I've been thinking about the selfie. Does the smiling face taken at arms length with the point of interest exiting stage left, really tell us anything anymore - except how egocentric we've all become? “Here I am at the Taj Mahal” or “Here I am at the Eiffel Tower”. The faces stay the same, but the object of interest that we came to see can barely be seen. In this collection, I would like to put us back into the context of being a part of the landscape and not the centre of it. Can the small figure that is part of the background tell a more interesting story, that is somehow more inclusive and at the same time more revealing? I've been losing the chaos of details and most of the colour in order to concentrate on the big picture. Finding strangeness in the spare results. I am inspired by Japanese prints: subject matter, colour and particularly the use of seals and text. The seals often enhance the composition and in the use of vivid red; which is often absent in the subduded tones of the picture, they add a certain joy de vivre.

Finding it increasingly difficult to conform to the constraints of commercial photography, I want to break the rules and shoot into the sun. I'm tired of telling lies with the camera, doing the same blue sky shots; prettifying reality, cloning out the crowds and the detrits left behind - creating an artifice . In doing this, I've been turning my back on the degradation of nature that I have seen happening everywhere, allowing the viewer to feel untroubled in an imagined beauty that often, in reality is being lost. By always changing our point of view in order to leave out the ugly, we are collaberating in the Earth's destruction, by making everything look alright. I'm finding solace in making pictures that are being truthfully created. I want to be in the mists and where the light is too low and not worry about the accompanying noise. I want to push the processing boundaries to see what happens. My pictures are clearly a creation and have a story to tell. I am from England but live in France
