About The Artwork

This is THE ONLY large format Artist's Proof of Vikram Kushwah's most iconic photograph, 'Ofelea and the Flying Balloons' (from his acclaimed 'Ofelea' series) that featured in 'AOP50 : Images That Defined The Age' exhibition in London. This exhibition featured 50 of the most iconic images shot by AOP members in the past 50 years, including the famous Twiggy and Nelson Mandela portraits. The image was shot in rural Kent (also known as the Garden of England) in a medieval college for priests, built in 1362 and partly rebuilt in 1598. The photograph, which has its roots in the Freudian theory of 'The Uncanny' (Das Unheimliche), is part of a larger body of work titled 'Ofelea'. The series can be viewed here : https://www.vikramkushwah.com/ofelea (please copy the url and paste it in your browser if the link does not work). Researched and shot over a period of nine months, this project has involved long aimless walks in the woods in Kent, meeting strange people and finding myself in remote and isolated places as a result of which my daydreams/dreamscapes gave me rather peculiar visuals. Intricate study of the art and writings of the surrealists and re-visiting my very old storybooks helped me give perspective to the Freudian philosophy of the uncanny. Rather than illustrating the uncanny, the idea here is to give the viewer an experience of the uncanny by extracting fragments of desires and fantasies buried within the sub-conscious. The photograph has been shot on an analog medium format camera using black and white film. The artwork will be signed at the back and will come with a Certificate of Authenticity.
