About The Artwork

Wonder Valley They came for a promise… Lured by the adventure of the American West, thousands of hearty souls staked their claims on remote and often harsh tracts of land under the Homestead Act. Signed into law by President Abraham Lincoln in 1862 to encourage settlement in sparsely populated areas of the country, it provided the adventures and hearty with 160 acres of frontier land at no cost. To gain ownership of the land, the homesteader had to build a structure at least twelve by fifteen feet and live on the land. With little money and often few buildings materials, some of the homes were crude and made for a hard life in then-desolate areas. As the population has expanded, many of these homestead are now part of thriving, larger communities. It is the ultimate paradox to see one of the few remaining structures, often in the last stages of decay, near a new house with a closet larger than the pioneer’s entire home. This series documents some of the last remaining monuments to a spirit of hope, adventure and courage. This is one of 5 in the series. All shot with Hasslblad Flex body. This allowed me to create a unique depth and field and focus. Be sure to view the image, as it only has portions of the image in focus. This is where I say something clever and witty about how wonderful and fabulous I am as a photographer. While all this is true, I just really love taking photographs. This all started out back in High School when I took my first darkroom class (for you younger viewers, go ahead and google what a photo darkroom is). After that, I moved to Los Angeles to continue my education in photography at Santa Monica City College and the Art Center in Pasadena. I started out as a fine art photographer. I was able to live in London and Paris in my early twenties and photograph loads of images. However, the fine art market wasn’t ready for me. That and lady Visa wanted to get paid. So I was fortunate enough to figure out early on that photographing architecture/interiors was my thing. Partly because buildings and interiors don’t talk back to you. So that was a plus. Over the last 20 plus years, I’ve been able to work with some of the largest hotel brands, designers and advertising agencies. Over those years I have small exhibits in the Southern CA area. One is at the Hammer Museum in Los Angeles for a John Lautner Architect exhibit back in 2007. I hope you enjoy (and purchase, just kidding, no I’m not) my work. More things to come. If you have any questions, please feel free to reach out to me. You can find me at www.scottvandyke.com Cheers, S
