About The Artwork

Palermo spirale is a portfolio of sumac leaf toned cyanotypes, documenting Palermo on Sicily systematically. The locations for the shooting were selected by laying a Fibonacci spiral over a map of Palermo, with the furthest polar coordinate at Arenella beach north of the harbour and the apex at my house in Via Bara in the city centre. Five other zones were chosen according to the polar coordinates of the spiral. In each zone, a medium format (6x6cm) film was shot on a vintage Bronica camera, capturing points of interest. These were scanned into a computer to create digital negatives for the cyanotype process. The cyanotypes were made on watercolour paper, bleached and toned in a tannic acid solution to produce warm-toned black-and-white images. The image is 36x36 cm on a 57x57 cm sheet of Saunders Waterford natural hot press watercolour paper.
