About The Artwork

For some time now, I have been searching for printing techniques that give my photographs the appropriate feel and lend them a certain uniqueness. In my opinion, there is not one single printing technique that works for every motif. So I was for my image series "Parenthensis" long in search of the right print, until I discovered on a trip through Holland, the work of the print master Eric Levert. The printing technique is called "Toyobo print Chine-Collé". It is a kind of intaglio printing, where when printing on delicate Japanese paper, this is simultaneously applied to a stronger backing paper. This creates not only a beautiful texture, but each individual print has subtle variations and is therefore unique. My idea behind the series "Parenthensis" is to discover beauties that are hidden somewhere between the ordinariness. Sometimes I connect the motifs through elements that I found on site, sometimes I leave the works as I actually found the scenery. Transporting these photographs back into analog space through the printing technique described above, and thus making them experienceable in a new way, has been one of my greatest creative joys in recent years. I found the subject "Parenthensis IX" 2020 on one of my photo hikes in the mountains of Baveria. It was already afternoon when I saw the play of shadows of these two mountain slopes. At my feet, directly at the place from which I photographed the mountains lay a stone whose surface and shape reminded me of the moon. I therefore decided to integrate this into the picture. After Munich-based photographer Yens Franke (53) learned analog photography and the traditional development of images in his younger years, he only started taking pictures again in 2017 after a long break. He devoted the first three years mainly to people photography. His artistic portraits quickly attracted a lot of attention and were presented at various exhibitions. In 2020, two of his images won one of the "Neutral Density Photography Awards" in the Professional section.

Since the beginning of 2020, Yens Franke has also been pursuing other photographic paths. On these, he allows himself to be surprised by the magic of fleeting moments and captures what he sees: random, everyday, beautiful. He is not interested in depicting reality as it is, but in showing it through his glasses. While a picture is created in a few moments, the image processing sometimes takes months. Yens Franke devotes himself to this process with much love and patient meticulousness. He condenses or reduces colors and combines forms in a way that abstracts the everyday, but always results in fine aesthetics. The new works of Yens Franke are full of poetry - beautiful and strange at the same time. Experimenting with traditional and experimental print techniques also takes an increasingly important part in his works, completing his presentation.
