This is part of a series of prints of places in Italy using a fisheye lens. The Piazza del Duomo in Parma is enchanting. This image was made at around noon after the crowds of visitors dispersed. The distortion caused by the lens was used to create a unique composition. The elliptical cloud highlights the tip of the campanile. This print is on 17 by 22 inch 100% rag archival paper using the finest pigmented inks. Please note that the actual image size is 16.5 x 16.5 inches. The print is signed and numbered by the artist and accompanied by a certificate of authenticity. Italy is a visual feast. I have photographed the people, the monuments, the cities, and the countryside in all regions. I consider black and white photographs to be abstract by definition because the color of the reality has been removed. The shades of gray depend on light and shadow. I reserve the black and white for the mysterious – the color is for the more obvious. There are many myths about Italy – one of which is that it is always sunny. When the days are clear the light in Italy does have unique brightness that invigorates the soul and inspires the photographer. But much of the nation, particularly the northern regions in the autumn and winter, is more often cloudy, hazy, foggy, and damp. I like the grays as much as the bright sun. Places are mysteriously transformed by the gloomy weather. Black and white captures this grayish aspect of Italy superbly.

COMMENTS ABOUT MY PHOTOGRAPHIC ART “Hyman is able to photograph things that have become visual cliches and make them fresh and see-able again. His work has a beautiful spaciousness, and evanescence, as well showing an appreciation for the geometry of places.” Kate Dobbs Ariail, The Independent Weekly, Durham NC, November 27, 1991 “David Hyman brings us the charm of Europe in exquisitely composed platinum prints.” Michele Natale, The News and Observer, Raleigh NC, September 26, 2004 “His platinum palladium printing is nothing short of exquisite, possessing an almost luminescent quality” Juror’s Statement – Diana Hooper Bloomfeld, 2006 Juried Photographic Exhibition, The Fine Arts League of Cary MAJOR AWARDS BLUE RIBBONS (FIRST PRIZE) in Professional Photography, North Carolina State Fair, 1980, 1981, 1983.
