Pope of Broadway - Limited Edition 3 of 9 Photograph

This limited edition metal print is from a 4 year photo project I was immersed in while living in downtown Los Angeles. It was included in my solo exhibition at Gloria Delson Contemporary Arts Gallery on Spring Street in June 2014. The first two editions of this print sold during that exhibition. The title "Pope Of Broadway" refers to actor Anthony Quinn who is pictured in the mural. Quinn lived in East LA and got his start in theater productions in the downtown LA theater district including the Million Dollar Theater which is just up the street from this mural. Throughout his life he gave back to the people in this downtown neighborhood and earned the nickname Pope of Broadway. The mural is across from the Bradbury building and uses elements from the interior as part of the background. It was commissioned in 1984 and is currently being renovated (as of 2016). The three sided lot reminded the mural painter of a church so he incorporated religious themes including the christ-like position of Quinn's outstretched arms (also reminiscent of Zorba the Greek) with crosses propping him up at the elbows. I felt that compositionally my interpretation of this mural should evoke the dynamic relationship between the gritty streetscapes of downtown Los Angeles and the heavenly presence of the cloudy sky. This image is printed on aluminum with a dye transfer process that combines heat and pressure to embed the image into a coated substrate. It is a robust and archival medium that should last well over 100 years. There is a floating frame on the back of the metal print that stiffens the artwork and provides a hanging mechanism.
