About The Artwork

This image is from one of my early images, and was part of my MFA thesis exhibition. Most recently, it was part of an extensive feature about my work in the second issue of COLOR in July 2010. As you can see, the image is very much like a painting. However, my painterly images are photographic in that they incorporate an element that is three dimensional and "real". They are "dualities" whereby the two main elements interact to create the whole. You may see images similar to this today, but at that time, I was alone, except for a few by Ernst Haas, however his were almost entirely flat. This image was photographed in the fall of 1974, late in the day, the sun bouncing off corrugated metal behind me. It was photographed with a medium format twin lens reflex Rolleiflex camera on Ektacolor Professional negative film. The negative was then scanned and printed with an Epson Professional printer using archival pigment inks on 22"X17" Epson Exhibition Fiber paper. There is a one inch border on the left and right, and a 3.5 inch border on the top and bottom. It is one of a possible edition of 15 plus two artist's proofs. It is titled and numbered on the lower left, and signed and dated, on the lower right, in archival pen. This image has previously been printed few times by myself on Ektacolor Professional paper in a darkroom, but they nave no doubt faded badly by now. In fact, anything from that era that is a "C" print has to look very bad. However, this print is pristine and will stay looking this way for at least 100 years. That means, 147 years from the day it was captured, it will still be perfect! I supply a certificate of authenticity signed by me and with the number and date of printing indicated. It will arrive in a sturdy shipping tube, interleaved with glassine and sealed in a polyethelene envelope.

BLACK FRIDAY SALE ON MY WEBSITE https://russmartinandmarciamartin.com Mr. Martin is a citizen of the USA, having been born in upstate New York State and spending his youth in the small rural village of Clinton. Because of this exposure, and frequent trips to their summering spot in the Adirondack Mountains, nature became a part of him. Naturally, it would become expressed though his art, which was inspired by his father, a part time professional photographer and amateur watercolor painter. When he was young, professional cameras were ever present, as well as a fully equipped darkroom. There was a mystique about photography, and "that place", that he wanted to know, so he convinced his father to teach him. Thus began a life long career as a fine art photographer. Later, he went on to study fine art photography at college, and earn an MFA in photography so as to be able to teach photography on the college level, have time to produce his work, and earn a living from what he loved. He was a fine art photography teacher for over thirty years, and is now retired, having done so in 2008, to concentrate full time on his work. Over the years, Mr. Martin has won numerous awards and feature articles have been published about him in national and international publications. Recently, his pictures have been featured in the UK, Australia, and the USA. His flora images of hosta plants have won first place awards in the Prix de la Photographie, Paris, the International Photography Awards (The Lucies), and the International Garden Photographer of the Year.
