Remembering the Mentawaian Located off the coast of Western Sumatra, The Mentawaian Islands (consisting of the Isle of Siberut, Sipora, Sikakap and Pagai) is probably best known for its surfing camps and white sandy beaches amongst the avid young adventurers. However, the island itself seemed to be a cutaway from the rest of Indonesia as not many Indonesian seemed to be aware of what is happening on the island and its depleting amount of indigenous population since the 2010 tsunami that devastated the region. It was in 1992 when I visited the island of Mentawai,Western part of the island of Sumatra together with two friends. The idea was to make a documentation about the Mentawaian tribe after we read a very interesting book wrote by Stefano Coronese, an anthropologist who spend his time with the tribe. And so it was after a gruelling 12 hours of boat ride (with rats as company) and 8 hours of walking through a jungle trek, we finally met the sharp-toothed people of Mentawai. I spent 14 days living with them and these are some of the portraits that I took in memory of the warm-hearted forgotten people of the Mentawaian Islands.
