A couple of years ago I was commissioned by the publisher NYTyrant to generate jacket art for Atticus Lish's first novel "Preparation for the Next Life". After reading the galley I realized we had a classic on our hands though it was a violent rough read. This was the original image they picked shot with the Hassleblad on 120 film. When they comped up the jacket they got a strong pushback from test markets and felt this image was too much even though Atticus, the editor and I felt it fit the narrative. I eventually shot another version without the blood and they used this. I also called Attticus and invited him to my studio to shoot his portrait for the back jacket. When the first editions sold out and the book became wildly successful a more established publisher bought the rights and covers became tamer and tamer for mainstream consumption.

You can see the first edition and my portrait of the author in tge secondary imagery here.
