About The Artwork

I like to construct strange interactions between ceramic birds and manmade environments to create improbable scenarios about how these symbols of nature are reproduced, consumed and then discarded. I work by compiling groups of images and artifacts, and then I combine the separate elements to form a tableau that becomes a part of a bigger theme or story. The birds are all found and discarded objects. The background collages are from old anatomy books and “how to” taxidermy manuals. The theater sets are from toy packaging or cut- out books. I compose all the pieces in an old built- in which creates boxed boundaries. These distilled lifes represent a collision of perceptions that I have formed about the way that nature and wildlife have been reduced to a commodity in the form of a curio or trinket. I find birds an especially powerful symbol of nature because they evoke flight, freedom and fear. All the images are digital photographs that have been cropped, sized and color enhanced through Photoshop. The photographs are available as signed limited addition 16x24 prints, and are printed on an Epson ink jet printer on Hahnemuhle photo rag 308 paper.

He works with a variety of mixed media, especially photography. He studied photography & filmmaking at PSU, PCC and Oregon College of Art and Craft. He works in many photographic formats such as pinhole, photograms and digital, using contact printing and alternative processes. His works have shown at 12×16 Gallery, Portland Art Center, and other galleries in Portland and the Pacific Northwest. My artwork takes a critical and often humorous view of political, religious and cultural content. Frequently referencing art history, philosophical perspectives and utilizing religious symbols, my work delves into the relationship between mainstream culture and images and fine art, creating challenging commentaries on our society. Often combining old technology with contemporary digital media, my work transforms familiar visual images into complex layered installations. Though I use a variety of mediums, materials and processes on each project, there is a consistent procedure and order anchored by specific themes, ideas and inspiration. Throughout the process of inquiry and experimentation with each project, new ideas form and can contain the catalyst for the next conceptual endeavor.
