About The Artwork

Recently showcased at the prestigious Salon Des Beaux Arts exhibition at the Louvre in Paris. Original, circular mixed media, gold leaf cyanotype. Hand-brush coated. Hand finished with 24ct gold leaf. Handprinted on handmade 100% recycled cotton rag paper. This artwork was inspired by Boudicca ancient warrior Queen of the Celtic Icon tribe, an important British cultural folk hero. Her name is derived from the word victorious, she led a rebellion to fight the Roman army. Queen Boudicca (In Gold No3) was created by photographing a hand-cut collage of female photographic portraiture, an illustration of an ancient torque and the profile of a horses head. The digital negative was then contact printed onto hand shaped circular paper that had been hand-brushed with chemicals, before drying in a dark room. Once exposed to light, the piece was washed to develop a cyan blue colour, pressed dry and then hand finished with 24ct gold leaf. Dimensions - 300mm diameter (unframed) 385mm diameter (framed) x 30mm frame depth x 18mm frame face Paper - Handprinted on handmade ivory recycled cotton rag paper: 320gsm / 100% Cotton Rag / Recycled / Acid Free / PH Neutral / Medium Rough Mount - It is recommended to keep this piece float mounted when framing. Frames are hand crafted. Float mounted in a bespoke, handmade medium sized circular frame. The frame is a deep box frame, museum grade, UV protected, anti reflective glass fronted and with a smooth finish. This is taken from a series of cyanotypes based on females in history and mythology. Ones who particularly inspire me, deserve to be recognised and celebrated as powerful figures in time. I want to visually tell a story with each piece to celebrate the lives of these amazing women using portraiture, symbolism and surrealism. I expose all my pieces in natural light for up to a couple of weeks. Printing in all weather conditions, doing everything by eye and in the most organic way possible, this enables me to be at one with each piece I create.

I am an internationally recognised, London based fine artist, photographer and mixed-media printmaker. Best known for my circular cyanotypes I embrace and develop innovative ways of reworking photographic images through collage and mixed-media print techniques, and by blending science, darkroom alchemy and art. My work explores the boundless possibilities of image production in the age of modern printmaking with an aim to reinvent, recycle, redefine, experiment and preserve. Female empowerment, natural history and science are recurring themes across the work, constructing visual narratives from the lives of extraordinary, trailblazing women - celebrating their achievements, uncovering their struggles and telling the stories of these often unsung heroes. "I hope people are empowered by the story behind each piece and that the subject matter ignites imaginations and a curiosity to delve deeper. The key emotion is to feel connected - connected to the story, the techniques and the science behind the work, and to be connected to the elements of nature I introduce to explore human experience and the relationship between each of us, and the world we live in."
