REMEMBER MY NAME (III), part of a tetraptych, depicts the pride and beauty carried by each and every black individual - male, female, trans - who lost their life to police brutality and injustice. May they forever be remembered for their strength, pride, love and beauty. Nana’s way of working is in a very intimate setting, which allows her subjects to be stripped to their very emotional essence. Her interest lies in capturing the undiluted, translated into movement. I was born in Vienna to an Austrian father and Japanese mother and spent my early years between Kochi, Japan, and Vienna, Austria. Being the odd one out in both home towns turned me into a cosmopolite and opponent of all nationalisms from an early age. I always had love and interest in the artistic side of life, whether that be playing instruments, locking myself into the darkroom to develop and print my photography, choosing fine arts for graduation, or attending dance classes with a passion. The aim to live and breathe - be surrounded by - art has always been central in my life. I moved to London to study Ethnomusicology at SOAS, graduating in 2000. By this time I was so enamoured with the world of dance that I decided to push for the dancers I respected and loved, launched a casting agency, working predominantly in commercials and music videos. Being with and around dancers enabled me to pick up my camera again and capture dance battles, rehearsals, shoots, and portraits. At the end of 2018 I felt a great need to prioritize my photography and the urge to share it. I participated in shows in the U.S. in 2019 and finished the year with my first solo show in London. 2020 had group shows in L.A., Tokyo and New York in the diary and since all have been rescheduled, I am hoping to show there in 2021. My subject matters are far and wide – if I am moved I will want to capture it. I focused very much on the undiluted emotions in dance throughout 2018-2020. Aiming to give an unfiltered voice to the body in movement. With this in mind, I created my first series MOVE!, DANCE:ON (formerly titled SPARKLES), and my ongoing series FLOW.
