Rickshaw Drivers, Kabul - Limited Edition of 1 Photograph

Rickshaw Drivers is offered as a single-edition unique signed print at this large museum size. This panoramic image of daily life in Kabul shows drivers gathered at a rickshaw stand in east Kabul. At the exact center of the image the minaret of a small mosque stands. Above in the cold blue winter sky a military observation blimp peers down on the scene. During the years I lived in Kabul making the feature documentary Angels Are Made Of Light I also spent many days making street portraits and large panoramic images of the city. I wanted to document Kabul as it really is, not the simplified and closed off images we normally see of Afghanistan, but something enveloping and immersive, that would show an entire scene - a tableau, to tell many stories in one image. As a group, the Kabul panoramas are an expansive documentary essay on life in the old city. The goal of my work in Afghanistan and the other West Asian countries where I have lived over the past decades has always been to express to a broader audience the beautiful humanity that I found all around me. The people in these countries have suffered greatly through various wars and conflicts, but their character remains stronger than ever. My films and photographs are love poems to my friends and all the people I met and who allowed me to immortalize them in stills and in motion. A portion of my income from these prints goes to support people I have filmed and worked with in the past, their education expenses and the upkeep of their families. The signed, single edition print is 96 inches wide and 44 inches tall, which includes a 2-inch white border. This is a signed print, unframed and unmounted. This single edition print is rendered on museum quality Hahnemühle Photo Rag paper, printed by a fine art printer using archival inks in the United States. About the paper: This paper feels heavy and substantial to the touch. I am making photographs as one might make paintings - in the sense that these are not action shots, mainly, but contemplations. I like the matte texture of this paper for the way it creates a painterly richness and lack of glare from the surface. In the hands of my printer the black tones of the Hahnemühle paper are deep, substantial, and pleasurable to the eye, and the colors are rich and inviting. Hahnemühle papers are designed for archival storage and are acid-free, which makes them highly resistant to ageing. The paper is also lignin-free, which means it should consist of linters or alpha-cellulose. Lignin-free paper does not yellow.
