About The Artwork

Limited series of 11. Awarded Photography at the PX3 - Paris photography Prize 2021- winner Curator selection - State Of The World. https://px3.fr/winners/curator/2021/1-99920-21/ In September 2021, this photograph will be 20 years old. It was originally part of a series shot in New York city, in late august 2001 for a fashion magazine and was selected to be the cover. The magazine sold out in few hours on the day of the release right after 9/11, quite involuntarily. It's been exhibited confidentially around the world and been passing through time and events without running out of steam. In 2020, with Black Lives Matter and the Me Too movements, the picture again brings a very singular resonance. Explanation of the picture within the retrospective exhibition written by Patrice Fuma-courtis, former Chief Editor of Twill Magazine: In mid-August 2001 we produced this image, with photographer Emmanuel Gimeno, it was a cover for 'Twill, a magazine we were supposed to launch a month later, part of an editorial celebrating NYC diversity of styles. It became 'Twill first issue cover renamed "Chaos and Confusion"published in Oct 2001. Last week we launched K+P : Le Manifeste Couleur : our 20 years collaboration retrospective with karine chane yin. We curated, and enlarged this print to the max (4x3 meters) as we really love it, and we still are thinking this was the best way to illustrate our fights for diversity and color in the fashion business. Sadly, once again, it seems that the odd destiny of this picture is to reveal something else than what it is meant to be in the first place.

Emmanuel Gimeno was born in France and studied high academic and visual arts technique at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts. He graduated with honors in 1990 with a thesis exclusively composed with photography; which since then became his medium of choice. He lived between Paris and New York for more than 20 years, conducting work of conceptual art, fashion photography and creative direction. As a great admirer of Gilles Deleuze, he also believes Art is an act of resistance before being any kind of communication tool. He always preserves his disruptive visions which have brought him both great achievements as well as intriguing rejections. "Some of my best work lies in my rejection drawer". Most known for his work of image sequences, fragmented-cut negatives and multiple exposure techniques, Emmanuel Gimeno's approach teases the viewer with his shifted contemplations.
