Sense of Balance (part II) Photograph - Limited Edition of 8

"Sense of Balance" is an interactive audio-sculpture (see-saw), developed on the occasion of Ludwig von Beethoven Year 2020. The concept of the giant seesaw, an eight meter long wooden beam painted in gold glaze and resting on a silver block of wood, is based on a dialogical process and active social participation. In a playful way, Hoppe encourages you to find your balance with your counterpart. As soon as the see-saw is in balance, the canon “Silence” sounds – if the participants rock back and forth, the canon “Speech” sounds. Lyricists by Johann Gottfried Herder (1815): Canon "Das Schweigen" (Silence): „Learn to keep silence, o friend. Speech is like silver but silence at the right time is pure gold.“ Canon "Das Reden" (Speech): „Speak, if you are concerned for a friend. Speak, speak, to say beautiful things to a beautiful woman.“ In a choreographed performance on the audio sculpture, the two performers explore the balancing act in a clerical backdrop with the utmost concentration and maximum attention to one another.
