About The Artwork

Print Size 24” x 36” Matte Finish Edition of 10 + 3AP Year 2019 'Shades of Sunset no.1' captures the sun descending behind a tree, photographed from Hermosa Beach, California. First edition print in a soft matte finish with minimal glare. Artist Statement This artwork is part of 'Shades of Sunset', a series that captures three images of the same scene in which the sun is descending behind a tree in Hermosa Beach, California. When viewed as a triptych, 'Shades of Sunset' has a visual fluidity that begins with a naturalistic image and transforms in structure and appearance as the angle of light becomes more pronounced. The series draws our attention towards the subjective nature of cognition. Why is it that these three images are so different when the subject and setting is, in fact, identical? How can we understand the process in which light is bent through the camera as a bokeh to produce three distinct images? What does this say about the nature of the physical world and our perceptions of our surroundings? These questions stem from a deep personal interest in epistemology and psychology. Conceptually, the series suggests that there are often multiple viewpoints that are equally valid representations of the real world. My approach to photography incorporates light itself as a compositional subject mediated through expressionism. Captured in-camera, images preserve physical realism while spotlighting visuals that are hidden in our experiences. About The Artist Raymond Bonavida is an emerging artist who challenges us to reimagine our environment. Motivated by his interests in light, spacetime, and human perception, Raymond incorporates expressive camera movement with long exposure photography, producing bold, visceral images. Raymond’s interest in art began in Los Angeles with a 35mm Minolta, a home darkroom and an early education in photography. While studying philosophy and psychology at UCLA, he asked fundamental questions about how we experience and understand the physical world, graduating with honors. Raymond began offering artwork for the first time in 2019, and is quickly gaining attention for his unique aesthetic and point of view. First editions are now offered in dye sublimation prints on aluminum. Editions are very limited and will not be available once sold.

Raymond Bonavida's acclaimed series Moondance presents unique photographic compositions that explore the beauty of the Moon through its inherent spacetime relationships with our planet. Since debuting in 2019, pieces from the Moondance series have been jury selected for over 3 dozen exhibitions across the country, with Moondance no.2 winning 2nd place at the 2019 Art Through the Lens International Showcase. New Orleans Museum of Art (NOMA) curator Nic Brierre Aziz chose three works from the Moondance series for exhibition in New Directions 2020, while Moondance and Moondance no.2 appeared on a Melrose Ave billboard in Los Angeles as part of The Billboard Creative 2021 Show. Raymond Bonavida is an emerging artist who challenges us to reimagine our environment. Motivated by his interests in light, spacetime, and human perception, he incorporates expressive camera movement into long exposure photography, producing bold, visceral images. As a former student of philosophy and psychology at UCLA, Raymond continues to bring big questions about how we experience and understand the physical world into his art. Postmodern San Francisco is another original photography series which offers 14 fresh perspectives on bridges, buildings and city lights. Raymond’s intention is to challenge our expectations of how these traditional subjects are perceived and expand our relationship with the evolving urban landscape. Included in this series are Golden Gate Lights, previously on exhibit at Soho Photo Gallery in Manhattan, and Bay Lights no.2 which was awarded Third Place in Photography at the 2019 Newport Beach Art Exhibition by Juror Cassandra Coblentz, Senior Curator and Director of Public Programs at Orange County Museum of Art.
