About The Artwork

NESTOR HERNANDEZ- Cuban-American (1960-2006) Nestor Hernandez was a Washington based photographer. He was a staff photographer of Washington Public School system and photographer-in-residence of Capital Children’s Museum, Washington D.C who contributed works to publications including Current Newspaper, DC City Desk, Brookings Review, The Metro Herald, National Jurist Magazine and the International Review of African-American Art. Hernandez photographs are included in the permanent collection of Smithsonian Anacostia Museum, Washington D.C and Galerie de Arte Rene Portocarrero, Cuba. Hernandez was a member of Fotocraft Camera Club. In 2001, he was the recipient of the ‘Photographer of the Year’ award given by the Exposure Group. In 2002, he received the ‘Outstanding Emerging Artists award and in 2003 an Artist Fellowship Grant from the DC Commission on the Arts & Humanities. The photographs were taken as a UNESCO project that formed part of the 100 years celebration of Accra Metropolitan Assembly in 1998. Some featured in the book, ACCRA CLOSE UP. The prints are the only signed ones.
