About The Artwork

I began taking pictures at the age of 13. I was excited and enthusiastic about this medium. The first contact with photography manifested in a spontaneous and authentic way which gradually I felt that vanished. I was realizing that I was taking photographs, not as I once used to, when everything sprung from a natural emotion while being purely mesmerized by the world which I was captivating through my camera, but trying instead to imitate the already established photographic styles. When I decided to continue my studies in this field, I got stuck in a creative block. I stopped expressing myself through photography. I was struggling to find my own voice. 5 years later, I find myself being an artist as well as a theoretician. It seems that all I needed was a ‘’catharsis” in order to be able to create again. Today, I no longer aim for my photographs to resemble someone else’s work but rather try to regain my lost enthusiasm, while no longer being concerned with techniques, styles or synthesis. I just let luck and chance to speak for themselves. The photographs are left unedited, being an index of my personal expression, space, time and aura.

Doina Cojocaru Thanasiadis is a PhD candidate in visual arts at the National University of Arts in Bucharest. Having as a starting point the Refugee Crisis in Europe (2015-), her Doctoral research investigates hegemonic principles that shape our understanding of the topic of displacement, borders, and identity, while exposing power structures that perpetuate inequality. Her work methods explore pathways in artistic research and practice that disrupt relations of dominance in the process of meaning-making. Her methodology opts for synergy, and interpretative multiplicity. She turns towards narrative inquiry and lived experience in order to trace their relation to cultural and social phenomena by combining theory and praxis. Main mediums of expression: Photography, Installations, Video
