About The Artwork

The Objects Immobiles series employs digital photography to emulate a genre that was once considered the lowest form of expression in the hierarchy of painting but that has subsequently become highly regarded as both an artistic commentary and an elegant socio-historical document. I have attempted to remain true to the spirit of this genre as I utilize new technology to not only recreate the images, but to also add contemporary objects to the visual narrative and new cultural references within each composition. One of the many notable aspects of still life paintings is the effect of light and color which represent the temporality, variability and chance of daily experiences. Interestingly, digital photography and devices add a literally new light into the transitory illusion of the genre of still life art. The challenge was to incorporate this new light and vision into the venerable tradition while maintaining the authenticity and brilliance that energizes and illuminates the objects immobiles. All the images are pigment prints on matte cotton canvas. On stretcher bars and ready for framing. The prints are 20”x30” except for Still Life with mouse, which is 24”x24”. Each piece is numbered and signed on verso.

He works with a variety of mixed media, especially photography. He studied photography & filmmaking at PSU, PCC and Oregon College of Art and Craft. He works in many photographic formats such as pinhole, photograms and digital, using contact printing and alternative processes. His works have shown at 12×16 Gallery, Portland Art Center, and other galleries in Portland and the Pacific Northwest. My artwork takes a critical and often humorous view of political, religious and cultural content. Frequently referencing art history, philosophical perspectives and utilizing religious symbols, my work delves into the relationship between mainstream culture and images and fine art, creating challenging commentaries on our society. Often combining old technology with contemporary digital media, my work transforms familiar visual images into complex layered installations. Though I use a variety of mediums, materials and processes on each project, there is a consistent procedure and order anchored by specific themes, ideas and inspiration. Throughout the process of inquiry and experimentation with each project, new ideas form and can contain the catalyst for the next conceptual endeavor.
