About The Artwork

While walking with my young daughters through a field of lavender in the south of France, I found this bumblebee. I captured him with my Nikon D7000 and Nikkor VR lens at 200 mm focal length and an aperture of f/5.6. The pin-sharp crop you see here is of a much larger original image, and is the ethereal result of much time spent in my digital dark room. I make prints of this limited-edition photograph onto archival 66lb Arctic Polar Satin photo paper from Red River Paper using my 12-colour, 4800×2400 dpi Canon imagePROGRAF PRO-1000 printer. My inspiration for this photograph comes from my love of two things: 1. Impressionistic art of the 19th century, particularly the works of painters like Camille Pissarro, Georges Seurat, Claude Monet and—of course—Vincent van Gogh. These artists imagined new ways of seeing the world around them, and I strive to do the same. 2. Ultra-high resolution photography can reveal heretofore unperceived detail. When combined with artful cropping and advanced enlargement techniques, small photos can take on an ethereal, painterly quality and leave a big impression. (Printed at 16" x 20", this photo is 460 dots-per-inch. Pin-sharp yet alive.) I hope you, too, will enjoy the beauty found in the briefest of moments and smallest of places. Each of the seven limited-edition prints is numbered and signed on the back margin.
