Stuff That Makes You Stop and Write Poetry - Limited Edition of 1 Photograph

So I was working on another collection when the subtle paw-print of a long-gone-beloved pet appeared (whilst I was in the process of decluttering). I was compelled to stop and write an ode: Ode to dogs/ (Paws for reflection) Here is a song for 'The Unsung' Dogs of Ages Friends of the fool us eejits, drunks and tools An ode to the fur-bound rascally-angels Emissaries on paws whose patient sighs drift thankless down ages of smoke-filled spaces and sleepless nights. Here’s to the un-walked the un-washed the over-fed The scratchers at the door Supplicants of sticks Purveyors of balls The ones who bark away (to keep at bay) The Other. The Black Dog The Metaphor that comes and sniffs and cocks a leg to mark the posts and darken more than merely Churchill’s door That skinny stray without a name that comes to slink and dig and scratch a hole of darkness dragging hope’s marrow deep under dirt of another day …. DOWN! From him long may your warm noses shining eyes and pure hearts protect us (and your crazy wriggling distract us) Valé to you: Protectors of the lost Champions of the lonely Ever may you bound warm by our loser’s heels as we stumble down Life’s Prickly Lanes to where… we mostly Don’t Know. So, here’s cheers for persistent paws pressed in comfort: The panting solace of toothless Bruce Of Ruby, Lucy, Rex, Rover Two Spot Three Spot Monty, Red, Teacup, Blue Winston, Alby, Ticketyboo Damming up our tattered hearts with sticks, balls and loving licks.. and when you go: chasing butterflies and magpies in the hunting-ground-space of sky? May your paw-prints long stain the sheets of our memories and the wild joy of your bark resound forever through the undeserving valley of our fickle hearts I offer now these hot tears of ineffectual gratitude and ineffable awe as a petition to that Higher-Canine-Power that stoops and deigns to bless us Those with hearts wide-open to a furry kind of glory Make stalwart and steady the way of those yet to rescue: Us. (Not them) Amen.
