Fabrizio Villa is a photographer and journalist. He started his professional activity in 1988. A ‘professional’ journalist since 2002, he is a photojournalist war correspondent, following the Italian and foreign Armed Forces. He has photographed for major national and international newspapers, specialising over the years in aerial photography. In 2004, the Italian Catholic Press Union awarded him first prize for a photograph published in the ‘Corriere della Sera’, a dramatic icon of illegal immigration in Sicily. In 2011 he won the Maria Grazia Cutuli International Prize for Journalism. In Sicily, he has reported the many spectacular phenomena of Etna with his photographs, also publishing a book with Alfio Di Marco ‘Etna colonna del cielo’ (De Agostini 2003). He has photographed for the American photojournalistic agency Associated Press, the French AFP France Presse and the Italian Ansa and Contrasto. He currently photographs for the Getty Images agency that represents him worldwide. In Italy he also collaborates with La Lettura, the cultural supplement of Corriere della Sera, where he edits the photography column ‘Scatti flessibili’. His reportages have often become exhibitions and books. He was commissioned by the Navy to produce the photographs for the 2018 calendar and by the Coast Guard for the 2019, 2020 and 2023 calendars. His photo ‘Chefs at the Opera’, the cooks at the Bellini Theatre in Catania, was selected by the New York Times as one of the world's most representative photos of 2019.
