AWARD WINNING IMAGE: Description: 'Supernova' Micrographic Image Year Created: 2005 Liquid Crystal - the 21st Century global nectar - we seemingly cannot live without ! and we rarely ever see it ! Its an organic liquid, used primarily for communication through sensors, LCD screens, computers, mobile phones or to turn transparents opaque by a flick of a switch. I was first looking at the movement of matter and its influences, when studying BA Fine Art at Byam Shaw/ Central Saint Martin's London. Researching Liquid Light and the psychedelic stage light shows of 70's led me to using real components, ingredients as opposed to inks and dyes I experimented making my own light shows - I used body fluids, sugars, plants, DNA and water as mediums to make studio-made slides and projected them onto walls and water encouraging the fluid to move through heat or agitation and dispersing Unknown to me at the time, I learnt Metzger had a dalliance with Liquid crystal in the 70's but nothing to compare to what I found ! It was a decisive time when I was invited on an Artist Residency in 2004, at the LCI Ohio and was given the keys to the laboratory and worked as an Artist in the Laboratory for 6 months. I Learnt about the unique molecular structure of LC; its properties, its far reaching abilities and the intrinsic textures, phases and characteristics of the nature of its movement. Using polarising light I tracked and filmed the journey of a liquid crystal bubble for a day until it burst ! but was able to observe the influences, currents, depths and sensual movement of matter. New born babies, animals, fish, plants, shells, landscapes, human bones, muscles even mobile phones are all modelled by liquid and that fascinates me ! The microscopic stills are available as prints in Limited Editions; as prints and larger gyclees using top quality UVA inks. There is also a 4 minute video 'Crystal Dreams' time based, available.
