About The Artwork

The "Swimmers Kaleidoscope Series" took over eighteen months to complete from my first layout to the completed Kaleidoscope. These swimmers were the NCAA national synchronized swim team champions from Incarnate Word College in San Antonio, Texas. I fell in love with their movements while watching them perform and was determined to take their energy and motion and interpret it into still photographs. I designed and drew out each image in pencil and then went through countless drills with the team to obtain the perfect graphic formation. This is one of twelve final images I selected to make a Kaleidoscope that includes 81 images in a very large printed piece. Selecting the right material to present this photograph was extremely important to me. It is printed as a dye sublimation on metal which gives the illusion of being 3-Dimensional. Several collectors have said that they feel like they can stick their hands into the print. The Swimmers Kaleidoscope series is one of four Kaleidoscope series I have completed since 2010. Each has its own personality and purpose, but all of them follow the same graphic guidelines and precision. I hope the collector of this image will feel the beauty of the interconnectivity that takes place between humans when they are determined to work and play as a team. www.hixphoto.com This image ©2011 Steve Hix Photography

For nearly five decades Steve Hix’s photographic path has evolved along with his subject matter. He began working in news and documentary photography in the late 1960’s, shooting anti-war protests for the Associated Press, Time and Newsweek. In 1974 he joined a very large commercial studio located in Kansas City where he learned many of the intricacies of studio lighting. In 1980 Steve started Steve Hix Photography where he expanded into location assignments in addition to operating a 4,000 square foot studio space in downtown KC. He grew his business quickly and his client list began to include major national corporate, fashion, product and advertising companies. He moved his operations to Austin, TX in 1983 where he focused on the top technological companies of the world. After working six days a week for two years straight Steve closed his studio in 1988 to travel around the world for a year to refresh his vision. He returned with over 150,000 stock photographs that still sell today. He opened a new studio upon his return in Kansas City, but began focusing on national and international location assignments. His business boomed and he was soon being featured in the top design and photography magazines in the world. His client list began to look like the “Who’s Who” list of the top corporations and advertising agencies in the world. In 1996 Steve moved his photography business to San Francisco where he continued to work on assignments worldwide. He won many national and international awards over the next decade as he photographed in over 70 countries on assignments. In 2001 he moved to Los Angeles to work with Corbis, where he began shooting very high end, production oriented stock photography. He left Corbis in 2004 to move back to Austin, TX where he started his own brand of stock specializing in the Hispanic lifestyle market. Over the next six years he built the brand, Somos, to become the highest quality Hispanic stock brand in the world. In 2010 he sold Somos to Bill Gates’ private company, Corbis Images, and moved to Colorado to continue his fine art career.
