About The Artwork

evileye Evil Eye is based on two poles: the first one relates to the language of images – whether is photography, moving image, visual art, cinema, fashion or visual culture – while the second one is rooted in superstitions and traditions that belong to the Moroccan Jewish community that immigrated to Israel. Following this basis, Evil Eye has strong elements of queer culture, which are channeled through the performative aspects of the wedding rituals that are traditional in the aforementioned community. Evil Eye is about viewing through the eye and looking at the eye. The eye is not a jinx, this time the evil eye sees through the eye of the camera without forgetting the evil that is attached to it.  Her wish is to emphasize the ability of the camera to glorify its target, its muse. At the same time, within the context of contemporary art, Evil Eye raises issues that are connected to authenticity and originality, issues that in the video itself are embodied through the parallelism between the aunt of the artist and a transsexual known as “Jennifer”. Through this structure, which is based on these two figures, and through their “representations” – original video material from the aunt’s wedding appropriated by the artist and juxtaposed to fictional video material created by the artist and portraying Jennifer as a bride – Liani is carefully balancing social critique with auto-biographical elements and an analytical approach to identity with a sharp understanding of the use of image in contemporary society. evileye http://michaelliani.com/ee https://vimeo.com/168767219
