For this “Taos Sky, 2019” piece I photographed the sky in Northern New Mexico. I then, subsequently, in Photoshop, stitched 16 separate frames and transformed them into a surreal, abstract depiction of a clouded sky. What resulted was a non-repeating pattern of varying tonality of billions of pixels. Because the resulting file size is so large (>18GB), it can be enlarged to 20 feet wide by 40 feet long with amazing clarity and sharpness. Regarding mural size, the mural can be sized to any dimension from 20 feet hight by 30 feet wide, to 20 feet high by 40 feet wide. The print is mounted on an aluminum track system 1 inch thick for attaching to a wall. A dye-sublimation printer is used to print onto an 8 mil, heavy knit polyester paper roll, 10 feet wide. The process uses the science of sublimation, in which heat and pressure are applied to a solid, turning it into a gas through an endothermic reaction without passing through the liquid phase. The sublimation process is a nearly permanent, high resolution, full color print. Because the dyes are infused into the substrate at the molecular level, the prints will not crack, fade or peel from the substrate. The print has a high degree of archival permanence and will not fade or discolor for 200+ years. The sublimation print can be easily cleaned using a diluted solvent cleaning pad, such as Mr. Magic eraser or Scotch-Brite erasing pads containing melamine foam, or a dust mop for general cleaning. Previous Press Release, Taos News, September 2016: Goebel is widely recognized for his expert and innovative use of Photoshop in creating images that run the gamut from believable realism to pure fantasy. His controversial position regarding image manipulation is that what he is producing is not journalism but fine art – pictures that are to be appreciated for their intrinsic esthetic value rather than for their accuracy in depicting an actual event, place in time or subject.

I have photographed 44 years; 37 years film, the rest digital. When I moved to New Mexico (from North Dakota) in 2010, I got my first digital camera and started doing landscapes and churches. I convert many of them to Black and White, using a technique called chromatic grayscale conversion. I enjoy the quest of locating, finding the landscapes and churches and capturing not only an image, but the spirit, the unique personality, the phenomena that sometimes occurs. For the landscapes, the phenomenon may include the varying climate, light, luminance, composition. For me, this is the idea of ‘natural phenomena’. For the churches, the phenomenon may include the creativity of the artisans who constructed them; the indigenous materials; the unique personality. For me, this is the idea of ‘elemental phenomena’. Often I wait for the full moon to illuminate the scene; to reveal a bit of its secrets, its texture, colors, emotions, that emerge only at night.
