The Gate of Jerusalem - black glass ambrotype - Limited Edition 1 of 1 Photograph

This beautiful collectors piece is an original and unique contemporary 18x24cm black glass ambrotype mounted in a custom made wooden box. About the idea: The Artwork comes from the series "Sacred Landscape" and depicts a chapel called "The Gate of Jerusalem" from the Sanctuary of Kalwaria Wejherowska (Poland). It's the sixth station of The Passion of Jesus Christ, built in 1654. In the series I investigate the relation between sacral architecture and it's surroundings. I've choosed the wet plate technique to highlight the eternity of sacral architecture created by transient human beings: the word "ambrotype" derives from ancient greek word "ambrotos" - that means "immortal", and the sacral architecture was among others created to reminiscence of the Memento Mori doctrine. About the wet plate collodion process: The process was invented in 1851. The process requires the photographic material to be coated, sensitized, exposed and developed within the span of about fifteen minutes, necessitating a portable darkroom for use in the field.
