About The Artwork

Technique: I create rough models out of found objects and basic materials (wool & clay), I also create backdrops to place the models in. I place the models and light the scene (like a mini-film set). I then take the result into Photoshop where I use my digital skills to come to the final piece that you're seeing here. All my prints are Archival Pigment Prints, printed on museum grade paper by a professional fine art print company. Approach: I always work from a core emotion to create a work. But, in the end I am more interested in giving the viewer room to create their own story (rather than imposing mine) this is why I don't express a direction. For me, it's about your journey, your stories and your relationship with this work. You can read more about my studio practises here: www.maeverutten.co.uk/inside-my-studio/ You can also see a quick video of my studio here (including a glimpse of this work framed): https://vimeo.com/272789218 ------ Print information This limited edition print comes in an edition size of 25 prints only (in complete total). The print is unframed and will be sent flat (as to not damage the print due to rolling). Recommended frame size: 60 x 80 cm Actual print size: 62 cm x 42.3 cm There is a white border around the print to facilitate mounting, so final print dimensions (including the white border) are: 69 x 50 cm

Maeve works as a visual storyteller and illustrator. She combines model making, photography and digital techniques in all of her visual stories. She’s fascinated by narrative structures (in stories and society as a whole), and how different kinds of characters and people are represented within them. This is all heavily informed by Maeve’s time working as an actor, where she often found herself wanting to play the male roles, which almost always were far more active and individual than those given to women. In Maeve’s work, she strives for every character to be an individual with a story of their own. Her inspiration comes from a limitless number of different directions: Nature, eccentric animals, David Bowie, Film Noir, Brothers Quay, Nina Simone, Rembrandt, street furniture, Picasso, Paula Rego, super heroes, fairy tales, Jan Svankmajer, Dutch landscapes, junk shops, Fuseli, Shaun Tan, Chris Berens, Patti Smith, George Orwell, Trnka, Shakespeare, Bill Viola, Titian, Maggie Taylor, Alexander McQueen, Prince, Helen Mirren and Jennifer Lawrence among many others. Maeve is originally from The Netherlands but for the last 18 years she has made London (UK) her permanent home.
