The images from the series 'The sublime light' are inspired the visual space, and the use of gold and representation of light in Byzantine iconography. The series was influenced by two research field trips to Greece and Turkey. The images depict sublime atmospheric phenomena and distant landscapes on a traditional photographic planar surface. The immortalised moment has been ‘gilded’ in post-production (hand finished with gold leaf) – unending forms, geometric shapes and abstracted designs, tracing characteristic elements of Byzantine religious icons. The compositions present multiple simultaneously-visible viewpoints that exist in the same picture frame and open questions about space and time in the image. They complicate traditional readings of the photographic image and can be described as ‘non-static-still-images’, whose meaning shifts and changes for the spectator as light reflects off the brilliant gold surface.
