The island waiting for the last wave is part of my series The Isolated Island, where I captured people standing on the wall of the Malecón in Havana. These individuals were unaware of my presence and stood there spontaneously, looking out at the horizon like many Cubans do when they come here to think, disconnect, or dream. It’s important to note that the sea marks our natural boundary. All islands are isolated, but Cuba is even more so because of its complicated political and social situation. As a Cuban poet once said, “the damn circumstance of water everywhere.” In my mind, I picture Cuba floating far away from the rest of the world, high up and surrounded by clouds. Based on this feeling, and using the many clouds I photographed during my travels, I started replacing the surrounding sea with those clouds, creating a dreamlike and surreal scene that also reflects a very real experience in my country.

Gabriel Guerra Bianchini (Havana, 1984) is described by Jorge Peré¹ as "a visual poet with a powerful sensitivity that leads him to imagine new meanings, and whose primary virtue is expressed by overlaying the harshness of the everyday. Reality, according to his creed, deserves to be reinvented". With over forty exhibitions throughout his career, such as "...Es la esperanza," the first outdoor exhibition in Havana's Cathedral Square in its 498-year history; and "Utopía," the largest outdoor photographic exhibition on the Paseo del Prado during the 13th Havana Biennial. Some of his works are part of the permanent collection of the Lugano Museum. As one of the first NFT artists in Cuba, he was selected by Time Magazine to be part of the TimePieces digital art collection. His first audiovisual work was the music video for "Noche sin fin y mar" by Silvio Rodríguez, for which he won the Lucas Award 2020 for Best Photography. His photographs have been included in the albums of prestigious musicians such as Leo Brouwer, Pablo Milanés, Silvio Rodríguez, Francisco Céspedes, and Harold López-Nussa. He has worked at international events like Rio Loco and Pause Guitare in France, Viva América in Spain, and at Cuba's most important music events, including The Rolling Stones concert, Diplo & Major Lazer's performance, Leo Brouwer's Chamber Music Festival, Havana World Music, Jazz Plaza, and many more. Bianchini currently lives and works in Madrid, where he recently opened his studio in the Carabanchel neighborhood. Jorge Peré¹ (Havana, 1991). Critic and curator.
