About The Artwork

*** Published on the VOGUE.IT / PhotoVogue website 5th May 2020 *** This majestic and intricate willow tree was photographed in a London park. It's a popular focal point in the park - next to a tiny bridge over a long narrow pond - which is home to Swans and Ducks. The tree is popular with animals too - often the branches are teeming with pigeons and squirrels. Viewed in the traditional orientation, we see the web of branches climbing upwards to the sky. Due to dense leaf canopy, the entire frame is filled by the tree. What fascinates me is that if the image is turned through 180 degrees it could equally represent a tree trunk and its intricate root system below ground. I provide an example of this orientation in the additional images. The TREE OF LIFE is a fundamental widespread myth or archetype in many of the world's mythologies, religious and philosophical traditions. It is closely related to the concept of the sacred tree [Wikipedia] WILLOW is used to make charcoal (for drawing) and in living sculptures. With its link to charcoal-making, I decided to give this Willow Tree of Life image a fine-art monochrome treatment. Fine Art Giclee Print  |  Limited Editions  |  See Technical Specification Below. Originally from Cheshire (UK), I started out painting with watercolour and later studied technical drawing as part of my engineering qualifications. Photography offered the perfect blend of art and science and my fascination began; travelling widely with my engineering work I found urban artistic inspiration in New York, Paris, Tokyo and Toronto. Settling in London over 20 years ago, I now live among neighbourhoods and buildings which support my passion for abstract, architectural and street photography. Influenced by my background, one could say I shoot with the eyes of an impressionistic painter and the mind of an engineer. I take inspiration from everyday objects, surfaces and scenes which are often transformed into the extraordinary, surreal or abstract. I'm drawn to urban oddities, colourful collisions, deep perspective and playful geometry. To capture the most compelling stories I prefer to shoot spontaneously, unbound by genre or subject. My images are often featured on the BBC and VOGUE websites, and have been collected across 4 continents. All images ©2000-2017 Pete Edmunds. All rights reserved.
