About The Artwork

This is part of my ongoing project "Neither Here Nor There." The series takes place in Metro Vancouver Area since 2019. After the passing of my mom, I moved from east coast - where I spent 20 years of my life - to west coast, where I had never lived. Struggling with the concept of transient nature of life, I stood at a seaside of Vancouver one day and saw cargo ships floating about near the horizon with majestic mountains behind. The scenery evoked a happier time I had spent in Hong Kong while growing up. Both a major global port city, many cargo ships arrive and depart and never stay for long. In my work, the vessels act as metaphors of ephemerality. Creatures, including us humans, come and go and are ever-changing. In the vessels, I fill my emotions of longing, aching, regret, and nostalgia as they wander the different realms. My main inspiration comes from the works of artists such as Lynn Saville and Hiroshi Sugimoto, who are proponents of long exposure photography. Similar to some of the pictures they have created, mine are also devoid of human presence and eerie. Most of my images contain subjects that are often multiplied or blurred. These effects are achieved by dragging the camera across during the exposure. The result mimic multiple exposure shots, challenge the concept of reality, enter a dreamlike state, and lend surreal or spectral quality. This picture was taken in West Vancouver on the beaches of Ambleside on a cold day in November 2019. Paper quality: Finest museum-quality, archival paper made by Hahnemuhle. 308gsm. 100% cotton. Acid free. This is a matte paper that is similar to Arches watercolour paper. Margin: 1" every side. Ink quality: Epson Ultrachrome HD, also archival. Comes with Hahnemuhle's authenticity certificate with a holographic sticker on the back as well as signature on the front right bottom corner. More dimensions with signatures available on my website.

Vancouver based Canadian photographer, Louise Kim, was educated at Pratt Institute and International Center of Photography in New York. Lou vacillated between painting (& drawing) and photography for many years, before fully committing to photography in mid 2019. Growing up in East Asia and North America, back-and-forth, having fond memories of the beaches of Hong Kong, Lou specializes in semi-abstract seascape photography. Working with a 35mm digital camera utilizing long exposures, they create surreal seascapes to capture the flow of time and space in a frame.
