About The Artwork

Precessions As an artist I have become intrigued with the writing of the French philosopher Jean Baudrillard. In Simulacra and Simulation he questions the relationship between reality, symbols and society. Baudrillard believes that our contemporary society has substituted reality and meaning with symbols and signs. Moreover, Baudrillard believes that society has become so overloaded with these simulacra and our lives so pervaded with the constructs of society that all meaning had been made meaningless by “the infinitely mutable.” Baudrillard called this phenomenon the “precession of simulacra.” My photographic constructs are illustrative of such a precession and what Baudrillard calls “the proof of art through antiart.” All the photographs were shot digitally through the view-finder of an analog camera, either a Ciro-flex or a Kodak Duaflex. By using the old technology of these analog cameras to create an image of an image, I’m interested in making a link to a historical period when the flow of simulacra was just beginning to create an era of mass reproduction and reproducibility. Is our electronic media culture one of too much information, or a mere pretense, a sham of vague representation? A Simulacrum?

He works with a variety of mixed media, especially photography. He studied photography & filmmaking at PSU, PCC and Oregon College of Art and Craft. He works in many photographic formats such as pinhole, photograms and digital, using contact printing and alternative processes. His works have shown at 12×16 Gallery, Portland Art Center, and other galleries in Portland and the Pacific Northwest. My artwork takes a critical and often humorous view of political, religious and cultural content. Frequently referencing art history, philosophical perspectives and utilizing religious symbols, my work delves into the relationship between mainstream culture and images and fine art, creating challenging commentaries on our society. Often combining old technology with contemporary digital media, my work transforms familiar visual images into complex layered installations. Though I use a variety of mediums, materials and processes on each project, there is a consistent procedure and order anchored by specific themes, ideas and inspiration. Throughout the process of inquiry and experimentation with each project, new ideas form and can contain the catalyst for the next conceptual endeavor.
