About The Artwork

I have always been driven by the desire to show the struggle a woman has to live by her individual passions and thoughts. The inner and outer beauty of a woman, her passions and individuality is exemplified by the female body. Flowers, branches, and other living things also represent those passions. The steel represents reality and society. Individual passions sometimes struggle to exist against reality, but can accomplish a harmony with it, just as the steel can bend. The images represent this dichotomy of conflict and/or harmony in life. My subject matter began with living things against the steel, for example flowers, branches, ocean....The most obvious representation is the nude woman. This is where I have landed.

For many years, Jan Gordon has been casting her passionate photographer’s eye on the world, capturing shapes, lights, moments, people, urban settings, natural environments and more, mixing them, setting them against each other, reinterpreting them in her own unique way—a new artistic image born from her imagination. From these striking contrasts, Jan brings up an aesthetic emotion, sharing her personal vision of our world’s ambiguity with elegant style, tender sensuality and empathic humor. Whether she creates abstract images by distorting lines, painting a body, mixing textures and materials in real situations or she creates fresques enhancing the spirit of a country, a city, a family, Jan is always exploring new ways of bringing up beauty, emotion, understanding. Through the years, her various projects have included carrying a mannequin head around Paris and photographing it in different situations, painting a model’s body with acrylic paint and covering her with wood and steel, making collages from real photos and mannequins and bodies and photographing the collage. These have led to more recent projects combining living elements such as flowers and branches with steel, and then onto the present combination of nudes and steel. Jan’s study of photography began in Paris in French, continued in New York at the International Center for Photography and then in Los Angeles at UCLA. Her distinctive pictures have appeared in magazines, such as Vogue and Bazaar, and in several museums and galleries, such as Bobbie Greenfield Gallery, LA Photo and Wall Street Gallery. They have been selected by designers to decorate buildings, lobbies, hallways and apartments, and have been sold in stores throughout the United States. Her work is owned internationally and is part of a number of private collections, among them, over 150 families with portraits, collages and books.
