Art Description

Photography: Digital on Paper.

Note

This particular work is by far and away the most popular of the work I have produced so far. Saatchi, for the moment, does not have an Art Management System where you can arrange the art work in a coherent order. At present they, the works, sit in the order in which they were put up.

Since people like this work so much I have moved it closer to the top with the result that the record of the number of visitors has been disrupted. On 18 July, 2017, it had 284 visitors up to the point when I moved it.

***

Since the advent of photography artists have sought to depict images which cannot be captured by photographic means. Among these are natural phenomena where the light effects defeat even the most sophisticated of cameras.

But the artist takes these to extend them to enhance dramatic effect.

The composition of this work is inspired by the natural landscapes of South Africa, where the artist lived for a number of years.

Due to the absence of city lights, nighttime has a quality which it is not possible to experience in more populated areas. In addition, in South Africa there is an inexplicable connection to the deep past of human existence long before the settling of people as sedentary.

The idea of the work is to suggest to the viewer that ancient past back through the 250,000 years or so that our species, Homo Sapiens, has existed.

In the back of our minds we are all haunted by a sense of our deep past.
