About The Artwork

thank you for looking at my art work, pleased be advised this is a limited edition of 20 prints, 19 available This piece is from an exhibition weatherRED from 2015 Bernie Slater opening speech: As some of you may already be aware, Karyn’s body of work for this exhibition explores a connection to her mother - who died when Karyn was 10, and this connection is explored through her 2 daughters, whose beautiful red hair echoes that of their grandmother. And when I read about this I thought ‘that’s pretty amazing’ because also knowing a bit about Karyn, I knew that this wasn’t going to be simply about family lineage, but about a strong connection.. A family tree diagram is logical and easy to understand at first sight. But memory, connectedness and a spiritual sense of connectedness aren’t like that. They’re much more than data. They’re indistinct, ungraspable, and come to you in waves. Like when my son says something or gives me a particular look that might remind me of a distant family member, or the smell of a jacket that might recall my childhood tendencies. Which brings me to my one fancy art word that I’m going to use tonight - Ostranenie. This word was coined by Vicktor Shlovsky in 1917 who used the term to talk about how writers and artists can use defamiliarisation to enhance the way we see, or understand or experience things. Shlovsky was a writer, one of the Russian formalists, and he spoke about ostranenie in terms of the difference between poetic language and practical language. Poetry can be difficult to understand - it can take time, but it ends up providing a richer, evocative experience. It forces us to switch of autopilot and really try to understand something that might otherwise be commonplace or easily understood. As Shlovsky says, “The purpose of art is to impart the sensation of things as they are perceived and not as they are known. The technique of art is to make objects 'unfamiliar', to make forms difficult, to increase the difficulty and length of perception because the process of perception is an aesthetic end in itself and must be prolonged. Art is a way of experiencing the artfulness of an object; the object is not important.” Karyn uses ostranenie - defamiliarisation to get at this ungraspable sense of connection that can’t be recorded or measured. When we look at her works, we see this layering of photographs of this brilliant red hair of her daughters, with textures from neighbourhood underpasses, floral patterns and old wedding dresses. Her objects, these wispy nests and warm pockets speak of nurturing and warmth. Each one could represent a separate family connection. Drawn from memories, natural inclinations and uncanny coincidences, explored through composition, textures and careful use of colour, Karyn’s works coalesce in our minds to represent an experience.
