Photography, laser etching on Marble
Size: 12 W x 12 H x 0.5 D in
The images created are concerned with ideas of mundanity and otherness. The everyday is the site of fundamental ambiguity, it is where we become alienated and where we can realize our own creativity. The imagery shown are items that are not fundamental in everyday activities and often go unnoticed when one comes across something like a pen, notebook, or a nail. Ordinary imagery with the rarity of marble brings about an interchangeability not seen within photography. Photography is normally considered an additive process, mixing and adding inks or chemicals to create a desired image. When photography intercrosses with the formalities of sculpture, it becomes a reductive process, taking away from the surface to create the image. This technique is also a new interest in the ability to archive photography. Theoretically, the images put in extreme conditions and still look the same after hundreds of years.
