About The Artwork

I perform a kind of ritual, and this ritual creates a strong basis for a conditional reality, and this reality is like a salvation from the things that exist and terrify us, a kind of relief and a hiding place. For me, to make photography is to look for an existence, a story in everything, to transform moments that I see, think, feel and dream into a visual representation. It is the reflection of my thoughts and experiences, my reaction and position towards different events. In this series there is a woman at some Sabbath day at her home alone. Staged photography gives me more control to make the occurring more sharp, to build reality on the set like a sculptor, when you can feel every detail, where 1/60 sec. of exposure is transformed to something permanent. It’s like to try to compress all of life in one regular situation and to turn emotion and feeling into an object. In my photography, distortion is used as a trauma, a shock, a pain that in still imagery becomes an open wound, a suspense that goes on and on. The uncomfortable situation and the position of the body takes away the secure, certainty sense of things, makes them more weak and vulnerable and allows them to open up.

I was born in 1979 in the North Caucasus in Russia. For the last few years I create in Tel Aviv. Once, I read somewhere the Chinese definition of imagery. They define imagery as follows: there are three mirrors, which reflect the people. The first is how you see yourself, the second is how others see you and the third mirror reflects the truth. I like to imagine that the third mirror is the camera. It's impressive how much information can be accommodated in a single static image. We can see different meaningful details, some emotions that stay or pain that continuous in a still image. It is also possible to show the absence of something, by an appropriate frame staging. It's important for me to be open and be able to see what is usually taken for granted, which means to learn how to discern the flow of an individual life, the subtleties and deviations, and try to combine them, to manipulate their different components: objects, history, prejudice and personal experience. I want to create the space where I ask questions and play with options for answers. Regular representation doesn't work for me and doesn't speak to me, because it became a kind of model, a pattern that is in our heads. So, to distinguish between what feels true and what doesn't, to see what works, I use overstatement, like this distortion, and I connect it to everyday situations. I offer to touch a situation - emotionally, through a mix of details, symbols, places, people, meanings and feelings.
