ABOUT THE ARTWORK

This photograph is in a group of six images taken underwater at the source of Crown Creek in the Sierra Nevada mountains of California. I was working for several summers with stream ecologists to understand how scientists describe landscapes and what I might borrow from their methods for my own work as an artist. In the process of surveying streams with them, I also looked for how the landscape might describe itself, with a minimum of intervention or interpretation. Reaching into the stream, the images were made by pointing the camera up, but without knowing what it would capture. Photography is typically considered a 'neutral' observer, recording whatever is in front of the camera when the shutter is released. Shot blindly through flowing water, the six images in this series do express that objective stance, yet the result comes closer to a dream which, rather than reveal a concrete phenomena, suggests a varied tangle of associations. Prints are limited to an edition of 30. I print them myself on Moab Exhibition Luster 300gsm acid free paper on an Epson P800 pigment printer for the highest archival durability in digital imaging. Your print will be signed and numbered on the back, and ships in a tube. Images are printed without borders. For additional sizes and pricing, please contact me.

I am a visual artist using writing, drawing and photography, and creating installations for unusual sites and clients. I grew up a Los Angeles suburb in a landscape re-imagined and transformed by human engineering. In responding to that influence, I work to understand how particular spaces and metaphors illuminate universal themes such as sunlight and shade, written language or water systems. I have been working as an artist for four decades and am dedicated to the evolution of my work and the advancement of the field. For more about what I do please visit my website
