About The Artwork

Why it takes so long? Is an exploration of a memory of an image. It evokes our awareness of time and space which still to collide and merge into one intensified experience of being and depicts our being in universe The photographs of the series are looped in one channel projection 2 hours long. The images dissolve very slowly one into another. The projection consists of 7 photographs 6x4.5 cm on a 20 year old film (120mm) with no digital manipulation on it. The soundtrack is an extract from a recording MARS EARTHQUAKE(Marsquake!) simulation used on courtesy of ESA (European Space Agency) In 2008 I was deeply fascinated with pin hole photography which I used for photographing places I lived in, where I commute or was staying at. I used pin hole camera interchangeably with analogue camera 35mm film. The 120 mm film is about 20 years old and after being carefully developed it was scanned and print with pigment printer on Harman Baryta paper. The effect is gained with no digital manipulation. Due to paper's sensitivity to humidity and delicacy it is adhered to foam and framed. The photograph is signed and numbered at the back. It appeared in Articulaction Artreview http://goo.gl/7C7Fqt

Marta Stysiak is a Polish photographer and cinematographer graduated from the National Film School In Łódź. She's the author of photographic projects and photographs of a filmic backdrop and social issues. She's also the author of photography for documentaries, reportages, short features, video art and experimental videos. Her photographs were published inter alia; Le journal de la Photogrphie, Dailyserving, GUP magazine and are in private collections. Stysiak is the recipient of the Polish Contemporary Art Award TIDE. Young Polish Contemporary Art 2016. In my artistic practice I draw ideas from the surroundings and focus on individuals and their stories in the belief that everyone has their own unique story which in a poetic way transcends the understanding of life in general. I use the medium of photography as a tool of research and exploration. I very much rely on people I truly know or love as well as places which allure me with mood, light or with no apparent reasons. Photographs of people, their sexuality, surroundings, temporary locations, rented flats in the country of emigration, rented but not yet paid for and my relation with those people in the past and present. I recollect a time and place we once shared or that I explore myself in my life I consider to be worth the most as will never happen again. I value intimacy, motherhood, landscape and places that draw the direction I decide to follow.
