"Window Curves"

Obscured and surreal are just a couple of words I would use to describe the “Keeping Memory Alive Center” in Las Vegas. This is the second image in a series of shots I took of this unique architectural design. Since the wall panels carrying all the windows shot off in all different directions, it was difficult to find some symmetry. And maybe this is the answer in the end, its asymmetry is its appeal. Nevertheless, some compositional elements still needed to be observed and while I wandered around it I found some angles more receptive than others. This shot, while appearing to be head on, has an unmistakable casualness to it. Its as though each windowpane is attached to a flag blowing in the wind and the strong lines that are designed to hold up the structure, appear to give under their own weight or bend with a gentleness that requires tremendous care. This attention to detail pervades the structure and the design is consistent throughout. Altogether cohesive in this “leaning of the walls” is what makes this so unusual and futuristic. This design flies in the face of traditional architecture and perhaps that was the architects original intention, so that the building would force us to look at things differently and that the research going on behind the understanding of Alzheimer’s requires us to think “outside the box”. As this architecture is a testament to creative achievement and to pushing the limits on conventional thinking.

Brandon LeValley (1954) is a photographic artist from the United States. In 1976 he graduated from Washington State University where he studied Art. His passion for photography was fueled early in life when he was still shooting film and utilizing a darkroom to process images. Holding a final print offered a world of experience seeing how the light on a subject materialized. Years later he realized the digital camera had revolutionized processing. Today, he converts most images to black and white and shoots botanicals for their dramatic line and shape. He’s also drawn to architecture and landscapes. Living near Joshua Tree National Park provides many compelling compositions that come from his explorations. While his journey in photography has evolved, his passion is still ignited by subject matter. A unique image, he believes, comes about by a disciplined and oftentimes exhaustive approach. Knowing the payoff can be so rewarding, that commitment to detail ultimately renders a more compelling work.
