The project “You are to me what I was to her” explores the emotional complexity that rests within the psychological aspects of the role as a new mother. As new in the maternal role you encounter a whole spectre of unfamiliar emotions. In contrast to the purely positive experiences, its almost a taboo, or not much social acceptance, when it comes to expressing the more psychologically challenging parts of the experience. Notions of isolation, loneliness and alienation, are just as important and normal as the more positive aspects of the experience. The project explores how a mother tries to come to terms with her new and unfamiliar identity.

Through exploring the relationship between our inner world and the physical body Maria's work represent a visual discourse on the contemporary female condition. With particular interest in the domestic sphere she allows the absurd to collide with the mundane and pairs humor with poignancy to investigate notions of self, identity and our emotional backyard. The uncertain nature of the boundaries between mind and body, individual and social and private and public, past and present comes alive in Maria's work.
