Expressions of a microcosm of high technology and delicate beauty, microlandscapes of artificial intelligence created by the human mind. A tiny corner of a microprocessor, its code cache unit and its dedicated translation lookaside buffer. The multidisciplinary field of artificial intelligence and its never-ending search for new devices and forms of communication between man and machine, as well as new areas of knowledge like neuroinformatics, microelectronics, nanotechnology, neuroscience, bioinformatics, or bionics, reflect the unquenchable thirst of humans for knowledge and new tools, which have characterized our species for the last three million years. Microprocessors and brains are extremely complex control devices running a variety of devices or organs connected to them. The central processing unit has transformed modern society, a precise machine running programs and instructions and performing logic and arithmetic operations with binary data at staggering speeds. The unassuming device depicted here is only a few square millimeters in size, but it represents decades of technological research in an internal microarchitecture so surprising that it defies the foresighting abilities of any rational mind. Progresses in artificial intelligence hinge on this device, a landmark of technological development and a necessary component of many of the everyday tools of humans. Only a large number of highly-qualified engineers and scientists working in state-of-the-art facilities can design and produce one of these "artificial brains", runs trillions of processes per second, and contains more transistors than there are homes in Beijing or New York. It boasts hundreds of millions of nanometric components arranged in several interconnected layers. A complex architecture integrated in the microlandscape of a city with millions of buildings. Transistors and other components form a three-dimensional network reminiscent of the intricate neural connections of our brain. Many hours (even days) at the optical microscope are required to explore the "big," nanometric-sized city. REAL SIZE of the subject of the artwork: 0.7 x 1.1 mm (0.029 x 0.044 in). As a medium I use the digital photography with the help of a microscope. This series belongs to the project "artificial intelligence", for more information please check out my official website: www.antonioromeo-fineart.com _

I define my author projects, more visual than discursive, like "Quiet and pleasant strolls through the microcosm of human: microspaces of a parallel universe of emotional energy." Like processes that take place in our creative mind of logic gates with switches of colors. The creative mind: the completely "irrational" and so exclusive trait of the homo sapiens. - In my teenage years, I observed to the microscope a thin slice of rock that contained an astounding amount of microfossils of single-cell animals, petrified hundreds of millions of years ago, but still telling about their morphology, their habitat, their staggering biodiversity, and their role in our evolutionary history. Their narration took the form of microlandscapes of endless mass graves full of delicate recumbent beings. I felt the need to retain that moment in my memory capturing it with a photograph. My pictures want be an unedited vision across suggestive and baffling parallel-universe, unknown but very close: tiny corners of an infinite reality. I wish to share these snapshots with other naked eyes, viewers diving into them and promenading through them leisurely: in a symbiosis of aesthetic experience, cognitive process and also a reflection on the theme of those artworks, speaking to us about our technoscience present which is writing our future. As a medium for my artistic production, I use the digital photography (fine art pigment prints) with the help of a microscope.
