About The Artwork

From the serie ÑATITAS: Retratos Inertes Portraits of human skulls, each one individually decorated with flowers, sunglasses, cigars and hats are called with the popular name of "ÑATITAS" (flat noses) in Bolivia, but each one has its own name. A series of rectangular Black & white photographs taken on site and as they are decorated by people who come to ask for favors and offer prayers. Portrayed in the General Cemetery of La Paz on November 8, 2015. This series of photographs reveals the rite that is part of the traditions or cults of death in the Aymara culture in Bolivia. Death is understood as part of their culture and the skull is a fundamental part of a religious practice and not an icon.

ARCHITECT - PHOTOGRAPHER Sergio Bretel Born in Lima Peru in 1977 His artistic and photographic approach explores the space of the visible, the invisible and the intrinsic, of traces and signs, of presences and above all absences through new forms of visual narratives exploring the conceptual limits between contemporary art and photography, following a constant multidisciplinary experimentation, using photography as a means and as an aim. His work is exploratory and conceptual, using abstraction as an intrinsic language, in search of a reflection from the way of looking, permanence and reality. Investigating from myths and traditions to the contemporary context, He is interested in the language of the image, human habits and objects as a means of approach and reflection regarding their presence, their incidence and their memory.
