About The Artwork

my work is mostly about the experience and dialog between inside and outside rather than the subject in the photograph itself. I use an analog filmcamera which allows me to include the factor of something that is beyond my control and measurements. and I use certain techniques to allow 'mistakes' to happen while taking the picture and exposing the film to light. that creates a different layer of information and feeling, in a process which is beyond my control, only guided by my intuition, experience and trust. I believe these kind of processes are essential in life and always reveal a certain form of magic and connection between the different dimension we exist in.

Composed of abstract compositions and images of the natural world, Jonas Loellmann’s work is focused on the experience of a moment and how a potential for emotions and transcendence can be found in visual perception. Loellmann often travels to different coastal locations, working in and around these areas and seeking places to surf, using the ocean and its surroundings as a recurrent motif. These subjects are presented as combinations of fixed-point contemplations and abstract immersions, absorbing the viewer into a shifting environment of saturated, auric hues in which subjects become forms that enable an experience. Loellmann actively surrenders his own notion of how things should be an opens himself up to possibility, allowing for an interaction between photographic material and the physical world to capture an encounter. He is interested in the hidden vibrations and energies that exist around us, using analogue techniques as part of an intentional process to further explore a dialogue between inner and outer perception. About: Born 1981 in Lörrach (Germany) Jonas was raised in the countryside of southern Germany, being the oldest brother of five siblings. At a quite young age he already dicovered a strong fascination to perceive and enjoy beauty and meaning in everyday moments and find out ways to share it somehow with his surrounding and the people around him. Photography became an important tool for him to capture and share this perception and experience it in a visual way. After finishing school, he went to Costa Rica for 6 month. Being on his own and fulfilling his dream of living by the ocean opened a door that showed him his deep desire to travel and discover the world. So he moved to the Netherlands in 2004 where he started his studies at the Academy of Fine Arts in Maastricht together with his brother Valentin. Four years later he finished successfully his Bachelor of Fine Arts and moved to Berlin, New York and Rio de Janeiro for longer periods, exploring and experiencing life in bigger cities. In 2011 he came back to Maastricht where he set up his homebase and studio to have a base where he can process and focus on what he perceives and collects on during his travels. Next to his photography he started several musical projects and joined the team of his brother Valentin Loellmann were he became responsible for the visual appearance and communication of StudioValentinLoellmann.
