« Delphine Jouandeau sculpts light. A dark, vibrant light. She fiercely delves into the bodies, modestly strokes them, and is perhaps also astonished by them. The shadows dance on the skin, discover a breast, an arm, tell us a story. We enter her photographs as a familiar world we would not have known how to look at so far. They leave us dazzled. » Caroline Laurent, JC Lattès Editions I apprehend photography as a meditative state. The silence of pictures is an invisible, suddenly revealed speech that reveals a quest. Mine is the one of the feeling of existence. What can a gaze, the texture of a skin, a smile tell us about the world? Grace remains the most beautiful mystery of all. It holds the present. I seek the present. The people I photograph are most of the time close to me, their personality and beauty move me. I welcome them in my universe without any preconceived ideas, without voluntarism, in order to give the meeting all its chances and all the space it requires. It is up to the others to decide whether they will unveil themselves or not, accept or reject the alchemy: will the abstract dimension they bear – a feeling or a state of mind – be revealed by the picture? No one ever knows. But when the meeting happens, the world widens. Landscapes accompany these portraits as so many intimate echoes of this revealed unconscious. A horizon line, a solitary tree. The nudes are landscapes too. They talk about love, confusion, peace. They compel us to look differently. The light tells everything about the models. The body is no longer itself, it has become a specific resonance. Trusting my instinct, I favour natural lighting, the only one that can create surprises and make the moment happen or not. Because I do not want to own anything.
