Studying the shapes and forms as I have been painting them has been a very peaceful and serene experience. I have them all around my house. I use them to hold brushes in my studio, dog treats for my lovey Cricket, flour and sugar in my kitchen… I printed out a selection of my photographs and brought them with me October 2019 to Chateau Orquevaux, an artist residency I was awarded in France. I gave myself a month to explore painting outside of my comfort zone of the traditional Boston School training I received. During my time in France, I painted large expressive, oversized depictions of doorways, and also doorways from The Jewish Ghetto in Rome as well. In between the high energy and excitement of those broad brush-stroked pieces, I would paint a Chinese pot to give me a sense of order and peace… and to be honest, maybe a sense of control. I am so used to being a perfectionist. I loved studying the shapes and color variations and intricate detail of the different designs and subject matter. I was already using gold leaf in my details of my large Italian paintings, so I decided to experiment with adding touches of gold leaf in my blue and white porcelain watercolors. The original watercolor series was created subconsciously out of something that gave me a sense of peace.
