About The Artwork

Description: Etching, aquatint on Somerset paper Image: 15" x 12" Paper: 19" x 15" Edition of 10. Fascinated by systems in general, where repetition seemingly yields infinite variations, I recently produced a series of drawings, and subsequently of prints, with the premise of using solely the simplest element: the line. If art is to put us in touch with the essential, our human condition, why not starting with the essence of drawing: the line? Whether they are flat, volumetric, familiar or enigmatic, the forms come to be, simply by determining where each line starts and ends. Put in relation to a datum, be it the ground, water or the horizon, the forms convey notions of mass, weight, and therefore of permanence. This notion of permanence gets in turn challenged by the treatment, which infuses the work with a sense of ephemerality, of overall instability. This dual condition is not unlike our human condition. Is anything really black and white?

Geneviève L'Heureux was born in Montréal, Québec, Canada. She earned a bachelor degree in Architecture from Université de Montréal and, in 1994, a masters degree in History and Theory of Architecture from McGill University. She practiced architecture as principal and co-founder of Atelier in situ until 2002. The work of the firm was awarded several high distinctions and prizes, namely the Grand Prix d'Excellence in 1998 and the Rome Prize in 2001. It is in Rome that she initiated her work on shadows and developed a passion for printmaking. Geneviève moved to San Francisco in 2000 and has since been living there with her family. She taught architecture at California College of the Arts for several years and is now focusing primarily on printmaking. Seeing the world through the architect's eyes, her printmaking work shows recurring themes of structures and rhythms, repetition and variations, and of various systems and their disruptions. Her methods of choice include drypoint, monotype, etching, aquatint and chine coller, which she uses to simultaneously convey precision and expression. Her printmaking work has been exhibited at the International Juried 2013 Atlanta Print Biennial, both 2016 and 2017 Marin MOCA’s National Juried Exhibitions, at Ann Arbor Art Center, MI, Site:Brooklyn Gallery and Prince Street Gallery in New York in 2017, as well as at the 2016 and 2017 California Society of Printmakers Juried exhibitions, among others. Her work was recently selected to be part of the 9th International Printmaking Biennial Douro 2018 in Portugal and for the New Prints 2018/Winter exhibition at IPCNY. Geneviève is a member of California Society of Printmakers and Graphic Arts Workshop and has her studio at master printer Paul Mullowney's shop in San Francisco.
